At Reddy Lab, we delve into the biological factors that support healthy aging, especially cognitive resilience in elderly populations. Our research focuses on SuperAgers and centenarians—remarkable individuals who maintain exceptional cognitive abilities well into their later years.
We investigate key lifestyle factors—diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep—to understand their collective impact on brain health. Our studies in West Texas examine individuals aged 60-90, highlighting the secrets behind healthy aging and cognitive longevity. Through cognitive assessments, blood samples, brain scans, and comprehensive ethnographic profiles, we aim to identify blood-based biomarkers that promote healthy brain aging and prevent cognitive decline.
Our research also emphasizes the vital role of caregivers, particularly in underserved Hispanic communities. We address the emotional, physical, and financial burdens faced by caregivers, assessing their support needs through qualitative interviews and culturally sensitive outreach. By developing tailored measurement tools and promoting trust in these communities, we aim to improve caregiver well-being and support systems.
Additionally, we have conducted new studies on sleep deprivation, uncovering its detrimental effects on brain health in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease. Our longitudinal research aims to explore the connection between sleep, nutrition, and cognitive health while establishing new sleep standards that minimize brain atrophy. Through targeted interventions, like cognitive behavioral therapy, we strive to tackle sleep deprivation holistically and enhance the quality of life for aging populations.
